Our main objective is to see a total ban on the aerial application of ALL poisons in and around New Zealand.
1080
New Zealand uses about 90% of the worlds supply of 1080. Banned in the U.S. due to "the extreme hazard to human health and to the environment". New Zealand aerially drops over 4000kg of pure 1080 annually, enough to kill 20 million people. 1080 poison kills an unacceptable number of non-target species, including dogs, cats, deer, birds (including natives), bees and insects.
Brodifacoum
A highly toxic rodent poison, far more persistent in the environment than 1080. It is the Department of Conservations (DoC), poison of choice for off-shore islands. Strict guidelines limit the use of Brodifacoum to enclosed bait stations, and never near or in water. Brodifacoum is not water soluble. It has half life of 157 days.
Large quantities of this poison have been dumped into the sea during aerial applications. DoC say this is unavoidable. We believe this is unacceptable. Brodifacoum can remain in the flesh of any creature which consumes it - including fish, for ten months or more. In August 2009, Doc helicopters were seen dropping brodifacoum baits into the sea around Rangitoto and Motutapu. Right now fisherman are pulling up fish in the Hauraki Gulf to take home to feed their families. Who knows how many of these fish contain residue of this lethal toxin. There is no scientific evidence that advocates it use near or in water. No one knows of the long term health ramifications.
The World Health Organisation (WHO), states, "Brodifacoum is toxic to aquatic wildlife. Avoid accidental contamination of water". FACT. http://www.who.int/whopes/quality/en/Brodifacoum.pdf page 12. This is in direct opposition to authorities telling us that Brodifacoum does not affect marine life.
A Pet Food Processor writes, "We are not allowed to harvest rabbits from farms that have Brodifacoum spread for Possum control for three years, yet beef, lamb, venison and milk can be harvested next day for human consumption. It's time New Zealanders opened their eyes," (taken from Campbell Live website)
Question. Can we continually drop all these poisons into our ecosystem and expect to get away with it?
Lets clean up this appalling relationship we have with poisons.
There are other ways to deal with New Zealand's rodent and possum problem. Trapping and bait stations are all possible, even in difficult terrain. The Puketi Forest Trust only use traps without baits. They are already introducing endangered species because the pest problem is so well managed. Check out their website:- http://www.puketi.org.nz
If you have some specific ideas, leads or feedback that you think we should follow up on, please flick me an email.

"Poisoning Paradise"
By the Graf Boys. This is one of the most controversial documentary releases of recent times.
The major broadcast networks refused to screen it.
It was offered free to view, and had an astonishing 20,000 views in this first three weeks.
Winner of the Environment & Ecology category of the International Film Festival in Ireland.

Stop Poisoning Paradise
The dumping of ALL aerial poisons in New Zealand should stop now!
No more 1080. No more Brodifacoum.
• This practice is indiscriminate and cruel. It kills non-target species including our native birds.
• There are many human health ramifications – short & long term.
• Waterways and aquatic habitats are affected.
• There is proof that it enters our food chain.
• There is a negative affect on the local and tourist economy.
• We believe that the whole science advocating aerial dumping is flawed.
With Ground Control, there will be:
• Larger local long-term employment.
• A healthier population (human and animal) – short and long term.
• Research shows that it’s cheaper to use Ground Control
WE DO NOT NEED TO AERIAL DROP POISONS
