Hon Peter Dunn, Leader of United Future
"The Poison Free New Zealand campaign and upcoming nationwide protest has my full support. United Future is opposed to the aerial application of 1080 and brodifacoum due to the untargeted and indiscriminate killing power of those poisons applied in such a haphazard fashion. I believe aerial poisoning operations present an unacceptable danger to not only non-target indigenous wildlife but also to communities in close proximity to the drop zones. I fully endorse the opinion of the Enuf is Enuf Team that groundbaiting is a more effective and far safer alternative." Hon Peter Dunne, Leader of United Future, MP for Ohaiu.
MP Todd McClay joins Anti Aerial Protest March
Rotorua MP Todd McClay is to take part in a march against the aerial use of 1080 poison in Rotorua this Sunday.
The march organised by local hunting clubs will be replicated nationwide on this day.
Mr McClay said that he had held many meetings with hunting clubs, environmental groups and farmers who have all expressed concerns over the damage done to wildlife as a result of aerial 1080 poisoning. Significant concerns have been raised and I am happy to lend my support to this cause to bring a bit of commonsense to pest control in the Rotorua area.
Mr McClay said that he was interested in the recent ban on the use of aerial 1080 in the Taupo District Council Area. I have held discussions with Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters about this and am keen to see whether such a restriction could be effectively implemented in Rotorua also.
Mr McClay said that this was not an issue over the use of 1080. Clearly it is important that we control pests such as possums however evidence suggests that aerial poisoning indiscriminately kills non targeted animals and birds including deer, pigs, domestic cats and dogs and native birds. It is time we considered other types of pest control such as bait stations and trapping rather than dropping poisoned carrots out of helicopters he said.
There is very strong feeling in our community over this issue. I am looking forward to meeting hunters and others this weekend to discuss their position on the use of 1080 in our district.
The march will depart from the City Focus in Rotorua at 11.30am on Sunday 15 November 2009.
